 Bogdan Grom and donations

Temporary Grom al Magazzino delle idee di Trieste dal 20.12.2025 al 18.01.2026

From 20.12.2025 to 18.01.2026

The exhibition

The exhibition ‘Temporary Grom Bogdan Grom and Donations’, on display at the Magazzino delle Idee from 20 December 2025 to 18 January 2026, stems from the desire to present to the public a collection of works which, in terms of quality and consistency, decisively redefine the artist’s presence in Trieste today.

Promoted and organised by ERPAC – Ente Regionale per il Patrimonio Culturale del Friuli Venezia Giulia (Regional Agency for Cultural Heritage of Friuli Venezia Giulia) in collaboration with Fondazione CRTrieste and curated by Jasna Merkù and Vanja Strukelj, the exhibition consists of a significant donation of twenty-five works made by the artist to what was then the Province of Trieste, following the important monographic exhibition organised at the Magazzino delle Idee in 2013. works that are now part of the heritage of ERPAC and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region: a precious collection that includes fundamental early works, testimonies of the Trieste period and American maturity, in which Grom’s symbolic abstraction finds its highest synthesis.

These works represent a heritage that will be permanently showcased in the future Spazio Grom in Trieste’s Palazzo Galatti, the new exhibition centre dedicated to Grom and, more generally, to the development of 20th-century and contemporary art in the region.

Alongside this donation, the exhibition also features a selection of works from the important donation that the Grom family made to the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Trieste, a large and varied collection of paintings, drawings, sculptures, tapestries and material documenting the entire span of the artist’s career.

The curatorial choice is to bring the two collections into dialogue with each other, to highlight how these testimonies represent a sort of “map” of the artist’s creative journey, highlighting the stratification of his visual culture: from his early paintings linked to his European training and the historical avant-garde, to works in which the synthesis, symbolism and secular spirituality of his American phase emerge.

It is precisely the painter’s biography, in his “wanderings” on both sides of the Atlantic, his continuous search for his “roots”, the evocation of a Karst region relived in American landscapes, between memory and contemporaneity, that make the work of this artist so significant. He was able to interpret the history and nature of our territory, always in dialogue with other cultural stimuli and experiences.

The exhibition focuses particularly on textile production, as evidence of the artist’s experimentation in the field of “techniques”. There are three tapestries by Grom in the ERPAC collections, and this was the starting point for the idea of broadening the focus on this particular sector of the applied arts, through the display of eleven other extraordinary artefacts from the Fondazione CRTrieste collection.

The exhibition aims to recount not only the generous gesture of the donations, but also the idea of the future that they make possible: Grom returns to his city as a shared heritage, as an international figure who is still able to speak to Trieste, its public and its cultural institutions today.
